Corporate Wellness: Contemporary Yoga

Yoga is…
meditation through movement

an ancient mind-body practice from Egypt and/or India (depending on what book you read) that traveled to the West in the 1800s. For our purposes yoga is a system of exercise that strengthens muscles, creates flexibility and relieves stress, combining body positions with breathing techniques.

The word yoga is Sanskrit and means the connection/union of the mind, body and spirit.

Contemporary Yoga sessions are positive, supportive and non-judgmental. This format is adapted for all fitness levels. Personal exploration is encouraged therefore although manual adjustments/alignments may be done, they are not the primary focus of the session.

Each session begins with setting intention and conscious breathing followed by a gentle warming series and core conditioning sequence. We finalize with a cooling-restorative phase that includes deep stretches, (guided) relaxation. Periodically, a bonus activity might be included in the session (during the cooling-restorative phase) such as a temple massage.

Note: The Contemporary Yoga session is Wholistic Fitness/Wellness based (rooted in Hatha Yoga) and has a lesser focus on the use of yoga spiritual philosophies and the use of Sanskrit terms (other than the occasional use of the words asana meaning pose, savasana referring to the corpse pose, or namaste’ used as a greeting or signal for closure meaning “I honor you”, “good day to you” (I bid you well).

Contemporary Yoga sessions generally last one hour. Wearing comfortable clothes that are breathable and that you can move in is suggested.
